In The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan a most noble character is front and centre at the beginning of the book. A very traumatised Christian looks here, there and anywhere for help, direction and consolation. Where to go?
With gravity, strength, wisdom and complete confidence, Evangelist provides the ‘way’ for Christian to enter life – “eternal life!” When others are full of doubt and discouragement, Evangelist stands alone and is resolute. Later Evangelist returns to Christian to clarify the place of the law and provide direction concerning the burden on young Christian’s back.
What a wonderful character is Evangelist. How important, how concerned, how considerate, how timely and how noble. May we embrace this character as a model for our work as evangelists.
